Eir, often referred to as the “Norse Hygeia,” is recognized as the healer of Asgard, with her name translating to “healer” in Old Norse. Some may find it unsettling to see her associated with the handmaidens of Mengloth, a Jotun goddess, yet it’s clear that Eir and Mengloth share a professional relationship. When Eir is present at Lyfjaberg, she courteously acknowledges Mengloth’s practice, and it is reasonable to assume that the same respect would be reciprocated if Mengloth were to assist in Asgard. Healers like Eir are likely focused on their healing work rather than the political machinations and wars that occupy the minds of others in different vocations.
Eir operates within the realm of Asgard, primarily known as the territory of the warrior gods, which aligns with her expertise in surgical practices. An official healer for a people known for their warrior spirit must possess the skills to address battlefield injuries, honed through experience. Eir is adept at performing surgeries, controlling bleeding, and addressing severe trauma, essentially embodying the role of an emergency room surgeon who must assess critical wounds and determine the best course of action swiftly. This role is distinct from that of handling chronic illnesses; Eir’s responsibilities revolve around making immediate life-or-death decisions as she confronts bleeding, injured bodies.
Her defining color is often cited as the red of fresh blood, although some associate her with green as well. A charm pouch dedicated to Eir should be crafted from red cloth filled with blood-stanching herbs like Yarrow or Bistort. Comfrey, a historically significant wound healing herb, is another of Eir’s traditional elements that accelerates tissue recovery. Red stones, particularly garnets, are also fitting and seem to resonate with her energy.
For anyone preparing for surgery or seeking healing, lighting a candle in Eir’s honor can serve as a meaningful gesture. Following this, making an offering can enhance the healing energies surrounding them.
Prayer to Eir
O Physician of the Gods,
The One Who Shows Mercy,
I beseech you for swift healing,
For the recovery of those ailing.
Guide the hands of those who heal,
Ensure no harm falls to the patient under care.
Bestow mercy upon them,
And grant patience and hope to those in need.
Hail, Eir,
The Supreme Healer.
Invocation to Eir
Maiden of Lyfja, Companion to Mengloth,
Open-Handed Healer,
Imprint your runes upon the healer’s hand,
Fill the hearts of nurses,
And guide doctors on their path.
Confer strength upon wounds,
Ease pain,
Provide comfort for the ill,
And promote unity for our hearts.
Mix all the sacred herbs in your mortar,
And bless us mortals with health in our days.
Eir, of the powerful maidens,
Attuned to our needs,
We implore you to hear our request!
