Imhotep, known by the Greek name Imouthes and active around 2667-2600 BCE, is celebrated as an influential Egyptian polymath and the architect behind the iconic Step Pyramid of King Djoser at Saqqara. His name translates to “He Who Comes in Peace,” and he stands out as one of the few Egyptians, alongside Amenhotep, to have been fully deified.

Over time, Imhotep evolved into a revered god associated with wisdom and healing; some texts also credit him as a deity of science and architecture. His multifaceted career spanned roles as a priest, vizier to Djoser (and potentially the next three rulers of the Third Dynasty), poet, doctor, mathematician, and astronomer.

While his pinnacle achievement is the Step Pyramid, Imhotep is also remembered for his innovative medical writings, which viewed disease and injury as natural phenomena rather than divine retribution or supernatural afflictions. Deified around 525 BCE, he was likened to the Greek demi-god of healing, Asclepius, and continued to influence medical practices well into the Roman Empire, with emperors Tiberius and Claudius honoring him through temple inscriptions.

Djoser’s Step Pyramid

Imhotep’s rise from commoner to one of Egypt’s most influential figures stemmed from his innate abilities. As the vizier and chief architect during King Djoser’s reign (approx. 2670 BCE), he held numerous prestigious titles, including First After the King of Upper Egypt and High Priest of Heliopolis. His religious convictions likely guided him in his responsibilities, particularly during the construction of Djoser’s monumental burial site.

Initially, Egyptian kings were buried in mastabas, which were rectangular tomb structures with underground chambers. However, Imhotep made a revolutionary shift by changing the king’s mastaba from a rectangular to a square base. His intention behind this transformation remains unclear, but it likely stemmed from a desire to innovate.

The Step Pyramid was constructed in two stages, incorporating an effective method where the masonry was sloped towards the center for enhanced structural support. This pyramid, primarily built from limestone blocks resembling large clay bricks, was also adorned with inscriptions reflecting the previous traditions of mastabas. Once completed, the Step Pyramid reached a height of 204 feet (62 meters), representing the tallest man-made structure of its era. The entire surrounding complex spanned 40 acres (16 hectares) and featured a richly designed temple, courtyards, and residential areas for priests, all protected by a towering wall. Notably, King Djoser was so impressed by Imhotep’s work that he had both their names inscribed on the monumental design.

Third Dynasty Pyramids

Imhotep may have had a hand in the design of subsequent Third Dynasty pyramids, such as those of Sekhemkhet and Khaba, both of which were intended to surpass Djoser’s pyramid but remained unfinished due to their kings’ untimely deaths. The design elements of these later pyramids bear resemblances to the Step Pyramid’s foundational and construction techniques, although the exact extent of Imhotep’s involvement remains debated among scholars.

Medical Contributions

Remarkably, Imhotep’s medical contributions predate those of Hippocrates, often referred to as the Father of Medicine, by over two millennia. He is credited with the authorship of the Edwin Smith Papyrus, a significant medical text outlining nearly 100 anatomical terms and detailing 48 different injuries and treatments. Although the papyrus dates back to around 1600 BCE, well after Imhotep’s lifetime, it likely serves as a copy of his original work.

The Edwin Smith Papyrus, uncovered by a collector in 1862 CE, employs hieratic script and is noteworthy for its rational approach to diagnosis and treatment, largely eschewing magical remedies. Each entry describes patient experiences and conditions much like modern medical consultations, demonstrating a forward-thinking approach that encompassed initial evaluation and prognosis.

Legacy

A host of Imhotep’s writings on ethics, religion, poetry, scientific inquiry, and architecture have been acknowledged but ultimately lost to time, with references appearing in the works of later scholars. Regarding the Step Pyramid, Miroslav Verner underscores its monumental significance, asserting its role in the evolution of monumental architecture in both Egypt and worldwide.

Imhotep’s visionary work laid the foundation for subsequent monumental stone constructions, enabling the later development of true pyramids at Giza.
