Accessing Content on Oxford Academic

Gaining access to content on Oxford Academic is typically facilitated through institutional subscriptions. If you belong to an institution that maintains an active subscription, you can explore the content in various ways:

IP-Based Access

Access is usually granted through the institutional network, enabling various IP addresses to authenticate automatically. With this method, logging out of an IP-authenticated account is not an option.

Institution Sign-In

This option allows for remote access while outside your institution. Utilizing Shibboleth/Open Athens technology, you can benefit from single sign-on integration between your institution’s website and Oxford Academic.

  • Click the option to sign in through your institution.
  • Select your institution from the provided list; this action will redirect you to your institution’s website where you can log in.
  • Be sure to use the credentials given by your institution rather than an Oxford Academic personal account.
  • Upon successful login, you will return to Oxford Academic.

If your institution is absent from the list or you’re having trouble accessing their site, it’s advisable to reach out to your librarian or administrator for assistance.

Library Card Sign-In

You may also sign in using your library card number. Should you experience difficulties during the sign-in process, contacting your librarian is recommended.

Access for Society Members

Members of specific societies have dedicated pathways to access journals:

Signing in via Society Site

Many societies facilitate single sign-on capabilities linking their websites to Oxford Academic. If you encounter the option to “Sign in through society site,” follow these steps:

  • Click the respective link.
  • On the society’s website, use the credentials they provide, not a personal account with Oxford Academic.
  • Post successful sign-in, you’ll navigate back to Oxford Academic.

If you’re missing a society account, or you’ve forgotten your login details, reach out directly to your society for support.

Some societies allow access via personal Oxford Academic accounts for their members.

Managing Your Personal Account

A personal account enables you to receive email alerts, save your searches, purchase materials, and activate subscriptions. Furthermore, some societies incorporate personal accounts for member access.

Reviewing Your Accounts

By clicking on the account icon located in the upper right corner, you can:

  • Check your signed-in personal account and explore management options.
  • Review institutional accounts providing you with access.

Troubleshooting Access Issues

With a diverse range of resources available on Oxford Academic, it’s possible that the content you wish to access isn’t included in the scope of your institutional subscription. If you believe this access should be granted, contacting your librarian is the best course of action.

Institutional Account Management

For librarians and administrators, personal accounts also provide a gateway to manage institutional accounts. This sector includes features such as monitoring and activating subscriptions, managing institutional preferences, reviewing usage statistics, and more.
