Our Rituals
Blót
The blót stands as the most significant and revered ritual in Norse tradition. It serves as a direct communion with the fundamental forces of the universe, represented by the gods. Engaging in a blót typically involves some form of offering and invoking the deity to whom the ritual is dedicated. This can be pursued for various purposes, such as blessing a marriage, enhancing fertility, ensuring prosperity, fostering unity, or achieving success in endeavors.
Sumbl
The sumbl is a ritual that combines solemn observance with social enjoyment. It traces back to ancient Germanic tribes across England and Scandinavia. During this drinking ceremony, multiple toasts are shared, celebrating various facets of life and honoring the participants. It kicks off with toasts to gods like Odin for wisdom, Frey for peace, and Njård for wealth, following a structured format before transitioning to the skrøneskål, which ushers in a more relaxed phase filled with humor, boasting, songs, and merriment. A sumbl involving around thirty guests typically runs for about an hour.
Knee-placing
“Knesetting,” or knee-placing in English, represents the traditional Norse baptism. This rite of passage serves to introduce a child to the community and solidify their familial lineage. In this ritual, the father formally receives the child from the mother, placing the child on his knee, symbolizing his acknowledgment of the child’s belonging to the family. Post-ceremony, the child is presented to the witnesses, who pledge to guide and safeguard the child throughout their life. Knee-placing provides a culturally rich and heartfelt alternative to contemporary baptism practices.
Marriage
Our organization also performs marriage ceremonies steeped in Norse tradition. This straightforward ritual unites two individuals in love, during which the gods are invoked to bless the union with peace, fertility, understanding, and beauty, in honor of Frigg, the Sky Queen. The marriage ceremony typically features a brief blót along with a recitation of the oldest recorded Norse prayer.
From our perspective, the combination of a legally appointed official, who conducts the formal aspect of the marriage, with our team performing the ritualistic elements, can create an unforgettable experience for all involved.
