In the mythos surrounding the Tuatha De Danann, a group of deities known as the People of Danu, we encounter various Celtic divinities born of Danu, who are meant to inhabit the Earth. Among their offspring is Ogma, recognized as the most handsome of Danu’s sons. He was gifted with extraordinary poetic talent alongside the ability to inscribe language. Folklore suggests that his hair shone with radiant beams of sunlight, earning him the title “Ogma grian-aineacg,” which translates to ‘of the Sunny Countenance,’ as noted by Peter Beresford Ellis in his work, The Chronicles of the Celts. Such was Ogma’s talent that he devised a system for humans to write their speech, giving rise to the characteristically Celtic ogham script. This remarkable ability stemmed from the luminous rays emanating from Ogma’s face. Furthermore, he is credited with the creation of numerous languages and poetic forms, which he imparted to humanity through beams of light. The divine inspiration attributed to Ogma is referred to as Awen, frequently invoked by poets and bards.

From Ogma’s lineage emerged three sisters, who were said to be wed to his sons. These women were named Banba, Fotla, and Eire. As part of a prophecy, it was agreed that the one capable of foreseeing the fate of the Tuatha de Danann upon their arrival on the shores of Inisfail would have their name eternally linked to the land, which would bear that name henceforth. Eire proved to be the most insightful in her predictions regarding the Tuatha de Danann’s future. In accordance with the prophecy, Ogma bestowed the name Eire (Ireland) upon the land, and forever after, it has been known by this name, with generations expressing gratitude towards Eire, Ogma, and the Tuatha de Danann for this honor. This narrative speaks to the deity associated with eloquence and creativity, with many retellings enriching the legend.
