Vali (often pronounced like the English word “valley” and rooted in Old Norse Váli) is a deity from Norse mythology known primarily through limited references in ancient literature. He is identified as the offspring of Odin, the chief god, and Rindr, a giantess. Vali’s most significant act was avenging the death of his brother Baldur by killing Hodr, an enigmatic figure responsible for Baldur’s demise. Astonishingly, Vali accomplished this when he was merely a day old, leading to speculation that his birth was preordained for this purpose, although scholarly sources do not provide a definitive answer.
In addition to this pivotal act of vengeance, Vali is mentioned in a poem that includes him in a list of gods who will survive the cataclysmic events of Ragnarok, although interpretations vary—some suggest a total cosmic collapse with no survivors at all. The scarcity of accounts about Vali’s life enhances the notion that he was solely conceived for the purpose of killing Hodr, yet this may also reflect the incomplete nature of the historical texts.
The precise significance and etymology of Vali’s name remain uncertain. One prominent theory suggests it derives from the Proto-Germanic term *waihalaR, translating to “The Arguing One,” which indicates a connection to disputes and combat.
As to whether Vali was actively worshiped among the Norse or other Germanic tribes, evidence is elusive. There exists a location in Norway called Valaskioll, stemming from Old Norse Valaskjálf, which translates to “Vali’s Crag/Seat.” This may imply that the site served as a locus of Vali’s veneration. However, the term Valaskjálf has been employed more broadly to indicate a divine dwelling, suggesting that it may refer to a spiritual hub or an expression of reverence to the deities rather than being directly linked to a specific worship of Vali. Much of Vali’s characteristics, endeavors, and his role within the mythological framework remain shrouded in mystery.
For those delving into Norse mythology and religion, a wealth of information awaits. This site serves as a comprehensive online resource on the subject, while my book, The Viking Spirit, offers a thorough exploration of Norse mythological themes.
