Celebrating Ullr: The God of Snow
Ullr Fest pays tribute to the legendary Norse god associated with snow. According to tales, Ullr, revered in Norwegian lore, was unparalleled in both archery and skiing, moving swiftly over the snow-covered terrain. Each winter, he blanketed the earth with snow, safeguarding it from harm. Ullr is depicted as a lover of cold climates, often traveling the land on his exceptional skis, engaging in leisure and hunting pursuits.
Stories suggest that Ullr was such an exceptional skier that he would soar across the firmament, leaving behind a trail of sparkling stars—evidence of those perfect powder days. Despite his remarkable skills, he was known to be secretive about his abilities, keeping the art of skiing to himself. Fortunately, he shared his wisdom, and now we honor his memory with festive celebrations. So, the next time you find yourself carving through a challenging trail or plummeting into deep, untracked powder, remember to call upon Ullr—his spirit reigns supreme!
The Origins of Ullr Fest in Breckenridge
Soon after the establishment of Breckenridge Ski Resort, local enthusiasts Sigurd Rockne and Trygve Berge initiated the Ullr Dag festival. This festival reflected the strong Norwegian presence among ski instructors in the area, who brought with them a rich tradition of celebrating Ullr, the snow god. Originally, the festival showcased a ski parade, skill competitions, and aerial performances, all by the talented ski instructors.
There were booths set up along Main Street, where motorists could pause to purchase Ullr Coins, yielding discounts at various shops. The inaugural Ullr royalty, crowned as King and Queen, were none other than Governor John Love and his wife, Ann. The festivities kicked off with a thrilling flyover from four jets, soaring just above Main Street, followed by a bonfire to close the event. Ullr quickly became an integral part of the Breckenridge community, blessing the region with some of the world’s finest snow year after year.
In gratitude for Ullr’s generous gift, the town of Breckenridge continues to hold a festival dedicated to this winter deity, now celebrated as Ullr Fest. Over the years, various traditions have emerged, including the Ullr Ball, the Ullr Bonfire, the Ullr Parade, snow sculpting contests, the crowning of the Ullr King and Queen, and even quirky events like the Ullympics and the Ullr Dating Game. While some traditions have faded, snow sculpting remains a prominent feature, showcased during the International Snow Sculpture Championships.
From playful currency to the ceremonial burning of old skis, Ullr Fest has always been centered around enjoyment and revelry—culminating in an epic party atmosphere that Breckenridge is famous for. Just ask the locals; they know how to celebrate in style!
Ullr Fest is a week-long celebration filled with games, festivities, and joyous gatherings.
