Accessing Content on Oxford Academic

Institutional Access

Oxford Academic provides access to its content primarily through institutional subscriptions or purchases. Individuals affiliated with an institution that holds an active subscription have several methods to access the material.

IP Based Access

Generally, access is granted across the institutional network associated with specific IP addresses. This process is automatic, meaning users cannot sign out of an account authenticated via IP.

Sign In Through Your Institution

This option allows for remote access when you are off-campus. Utilizing Shibboleth/Open Athens technology, it enables single sign-on functionality between your institution’s portal and Oxford Academic.

  1. Click on “Sign in through your institution.”
  2. Select your institution from the list. You will then be redirected to your institution’s website.
  3. Once on your institution’s site, enter the credentials supplied by your institution, not your Oxford Academic personal account information.
  4. After successfully signing in, you will be redirected back to Oxford Academic.

If your institution is missing from the list or you encounter issues signing into the institution’s portal, please reach out to your librarian or administrator for assistance.

Sign In With a Library Card

Users can log in using their library card numbers. If problems arise during this process, contacting your librarian for support is advised.

Society Members

Access for society members to journals can be achieved through various methods:

Many societies facilitate single sign-on between their websites and Oxford Academic. If you see the option “Sign in through society site” in the journal’s sign-in section:

  2. Enter the credentials provided by your society on their site; refrain from using personal Oxford Academic account details.
  3. Once signed in successfully, you will be redirected back to Oxford Academic.
