One prevailing belief is that she is the daughter of Manannan Mac Lir, the Sea God, though there are nuances regarding whether she is his biological child or one of many he adopted. Alternatively, some accounts suggest she might actually be the daughter of a druid associated with Manannan, residing in the revered Land of Promise.
Representing love and beauty, Cliodhna is often depicted as a woman of extraordinary grace, capturing the hearts of many. Her story includes a profound romance with a mortal man, which compelled her to abandon the enchanted isle of Tairngire. This act of devotion, however, displeased the gods. In a turn of fate, while her lover hunted, she fell into a deep slumber, cast by either Manannan or the Goddess Cailleach, and was ultimately swept back to Tairngire—some tales suggest that she met her demise.
In another narrative, a mortal man, realizing her magical prowess, sought to harm her. To escape his threat, she transformed into a wren and flew away, thus linking her to the concept of shape-shifting. Over time, her identity morphed into that of a faerie queen, taking on the title of the Queen of the Banshees, though many, including myself, feel a connection to her goddess form.
Cliodhna embodies joy, happiness, and harmony, serving as a source of inner peace during turbulent times. Those grappling with sorrow or difficulty may find solace in her presence. As a goddess associated with both the seas and life’s cyclical nature, she can guide us in accepting life’s trials and transitions, from birth to death.
