Cliodhna, whose name is pronounced as Klee-Na, stands as a prominent figure within Celtic mythology, recognized as a sea goddess and a member of the Tuatha De Danann. Her origins are shrouded in various interpretations. One prevailing belief is that she is the daughter of Manannan Mac Lir, the Sea God, though there are nuances regarding whether she is his biological child or one of many he adopted. Alternatively, some accounts suggest she might actually be the daughter of a druid associated with Manannan, residing in the revered Land of Promise.
Representing love and beauty, Cliodhna is often depicted as a woman of extraordinary grace, capturing the hearts of many. Her story includes a profound romance with a mortal man, which compelled her to abandon the enchanted isle of Tairngire. This act of devotion, however, displeased the gods. In a turn of fate, while her lover hunted, she fell into a deep slumber, cast by either Manannan or the Goddess Cailleach, and was ultimately swept back to Tairngire—some tales suggest that she met her demise.
In another narrative, a mortal man, realizing her magical prowess, sought to harm her. To escape his threat, she transformed into a wren and flew away, thus linking her to the concept of shape-shifting. Over time, her identity morphed into that of a faerie queen, taking on the title of the Queen of the Banshees, though many, including myself, feel a connection to her goddess form.
Cliodhna embodies joy, happiness, and harmony, serving as a source of inner peace during turbulent times. Those grappling with sorrow or difficulty may find solace in her presence. As a goddess associated with both the seas and life’s cyclical nature, she can guide us in accepting life’s trials and transitions, from birth to death. This capacity makes her an invaluable support for shadow work, especially for those harboring unresolved trauma—she aids in confronting past emotions that one may have thought were laid to rest.
Throughout my experiences with her, I have encountered memories and feelings that resurfaced, revealing layers of unresolved issues. Cliodhna encourages us to reconcile with these feelings, fostering true healing. Given her connection to the depths of the ocean, which hold uncharted secrets, she is also seen as a goddess of wisdom and insight, particularly regarding self-discovery. Among her many talents, she is known to divine prophecies, making her a compelling figure for guidance in divination practices.
Cliodhna’s affiliation with healing is predominantly oriented towards the soul and emotional well-being rather than physical ailments. Additionally, she sparks creative inspiration; if you’re working on an inventive project, her energy serves to motivate and propel you towards your aspirations with dedicated effort.
Working with Cliodhna is often straightforward, as she communicates directly and effectively. One memorable instance occurred during a tarot session where I sought clarity on my success. After drawing a card and reshuffling, I inquired how to avoid failure, only to receive the same card reversed—indicative of her clear communication.
To honor Cliodhna, simplicity is key. She appreciates being acknowledged, and even the most modest gifts can resonate with her. Recently, during a weekend trip to the coast, I sought a piece of sea glass for a lithomancy project. After creating a herbal mixture offering on the sand and saying a brief prayer, I serendipitously discovered a lone piece of sea glass nestled among the pebbles, following my offering. Establishing an altar, conversing with her, and showing gratitude can forge a meaningful connection—she will guide you on your journey.
